What about money? Are you going to 'hit me up'?

Accepted Answer

Journey recognizes that as a newcomer, you may be uncomfortable with the idea of money and so we want you to be our guest. We do “pass the basket” during worship. It our response of “offering” to God gratitude for all ways we experience God’s richest blessings. But as a newcomers, don’t feel any pressure or obligation to give; it’s really for those who have made a commitment to our faith community and the work we do.

What's with 'the comma'? Is that some secret symbol?

There’s a lot to the UCC Comma. The comma was inspired by the Gracie Allen quote, “Never place a period where God has placed a comma.” For the United Church of Christ, the Comma is a new way to proclaim “Our Faith is 2,000 years old, our thinking is not.” The Comma invites us to believe that God speaks through other people, nature, music, art, a theorem, the Bible, and in so many other ways. It reminds us of the unusual religious freedom and responsibility to engage the Bible with our own unique experiences, questions, and ideas. The Comma reminds us to balance our rich religious past with openness to the new ideas, new people, and new possibilities of the future. We’d be glad to give you a special comma pin to wear to help us spread the message!

What do I do with my kids?

Bring ‘em. We’re “kid friendly”! We offer a variety of opportunities for children of all ages to gather together. Children are invited to our special child-friendly worship area where there are toys and other activities just for them. We also offer Confirmation Class for young people who are interested in learning more about our faith.

I'm not sure what I believe. Is there going to be a test?

As part of the United Church of Christ, we believe in “testimonies of faith”, not “tests of faith” so no matter who you are or where you on life’s journey, you’re welcome here! Maybe you’re at the beginning of that journey, maybe you’ve been on the journey for a long time, maybe you’re not even sure you want to take the first step – it’s ok! Seekers, doubters and skeptics are all invited to join us as we journey together.

Coffee before, during, and after worship? Is that for real?"

While you might not find stained glass or big steeples around here, there’s no shortage of really authentic people—and coffee (and other refreshments) before, during and after worship. Our worship has a “coffee-house” kind of feel to it. We gather around tables. And yes, you can enjoy a variety of beverages and snacks throughout!

Where's the building? Where's the steeple, the pews and stuff?"

We believe that the church is more than a building – it’s a vibrant community of faith. It’s a not about place called “church”; it’s about being the church together. It’s kind of like getting back to the basics since the earliest Christians didn’t have big buildings. They met in homes and other public places. Besides, by not having a big building with big bills, we can spend more of our time and resources on service and mission! Now, that’s being the church!
